Paint Disposal
How to Safely Dispose of Latex Paint
Latex paint may be disposed of with your household trash if you do the following:
1. Mix in Cat Litter
Add enough cat litter to the paint to create a thick, absorbent mixture—about a 1:1 ratio works well. For larger amounts of paint, pour it into a lined box or container first, then mix in the cat litter.
2. Let The Paint/Cat Litter Mixture Harden
Stir until the texture becomes pasty and no longer sloshes around. Allow it to sit for about an hour so the mixture can fully dry out.
3. Place the Mixture in the Trash
Once the mixture is completely solid, toss the can (with the lid removed) into your regular garbage. Unclean metal paint cans are not recyclable.
Oil-based Paint
Oil-based paints are considered hazardous materials and must be disposed of properly. A limited number of household paint cans may be accepted annually at Ouachita Green’s Household Hazardous Waste event in March. For more information go to https://ouachitagreen.org/events
